The new, likely more contagious variant of the coronavirus has reached New York state, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday.

A Saratoga Country man in his 60s tested positive for the new variant, which was first detected in the UK last month. The man had no recent history of travel, so he likely contracted the virus through community spread, Cuomo said on a conference call this afternoon, according to NBC New York.

Officials believe the new variant is more contagious than the virus that has circulated in the US so far, although it does not appear to be more deadly or resistant to existing vaccines.

The new strain also showed up in Southern California last week, and has been found in Colorado and Florida as well.
